Research
My research focuses on gravitational waves from strongly gravitating astrophysical objects. I am interested broadly in what gravitational waves can teach us about fundamental physics, astrophysics, and the dynamics of compact objects. The posts below highlight some specific research themes and papers on which I have worked.
Research Theme: Extended BMS Symmetries, Spin, Center-of-Mass and Higher Memory Effects
This post summarizes five papers related to the conserved quantities of extensions of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group and related higher memory effects.
Research Theme: Dynamics of dark matter in intermediate mass-ratio inspirals
This post describes three papers on the dynamics of dark matter in intermediate mass-ratio inspirals (IMRIs), the gravitational waves emitted from these syst...
Research Activity: Athena and LISA White Papers
This post summarizes three white papers to which I contributed, one about the European Space agency (ESA) mission Athena and the other two related to the ES...
Research Theme: Forecasts for detecting the gravitational-wave memory effect with current and future detectors
This post summarizes work on when the gravitational-wave memory effect and spin memory effect will be able to be detected by the Advanced LIGO and Virgo dete...
Research Theme: Persistent Gravitational-Wave Observables
This post summarizes two papers about three new procedures by which one can measure generalized notions of gravitational-wave memory. The first paper was an ...
Research Theme: Brans-Dicke theory in Bondi-Sachs form
This post reviews two papers that treat asymptotically flat spacetimes in Brans-Dicke theory. In the first paper, we gave the conditions for asymptotic flat...
Research Theme: Definitions of (super) angular momentum in asymptotically flat spacetimes
This post highlights a paper and essay that investigates several commonly used definitions of angular momentum and super angular momentum in asymptotically f...
Paper: Constraining the Properties of the Progenitor of GW170817
This post summarizes a paper about how well one can distinguish whether the progenitor of the GW170817 event was a binary neutron star or a neutron-star blac...
Paper: Testing General Relativity Using Golden Black-Hole Binaries
This post describes a paper outlining the methodology for testing general relativity with binary black holes, which was later applied to the LIGO and Virgo d...
Research Theme: Gravitational-Wave Memory and Relativistic Angular Momentum
This post describes three papers related to defining a locally measured angular momentum, comparing this angular momentum measured by different observers, an...
Research Theme: Short-Wavelength Quasinormal Modes
This post describes two papers and a comment about quasinormal modes of Kerr black holes in the short-wavelength (geometric-optics) limit.
Research Theme: Visualizing Spacetime Curvature with Vortex and Tendex Lines
This post is a summary of six papers I wrote with collaborators during my Ph.D. about visualizing spacetime curvature around binary-black-hole mergers.
Research Theme: Hybrid Post-Newtonian and Black-Hole Perturbation Model
